When you shop for an amplifier you will see two power figures: RMS and peak (sometimes called PMPO). Understanding the difference protects you from misleading specs.
What is RMS power?
RMS (root-mean-square) power is the continuous power an amplifier can deliver without distortion, hour after hour. It is the only figure that reflects real-world performance, and it is what serious manufacturers quote. When World Tone lists the WTX-10000 DP at 1000W RMS, that is sustained, usable power.
What is peak power?
Peak power is the maximum an amplifier can produce for a brief instant — a drum hit or a cymbal crash. It is always higher than RMS. Some brands advertise inflated "PMPO" numbers that mean very little. Always compare amplifiers on RMS.
A simple rule
Match your speakers’ continuous (RMS) power handling to the amplifier’s RMS output, with about 20% amplifier headroom. This prevents clipping — the distorted, flat-topped waveform that actually damages speakers far more often than "too much" power.
Why headroom matters
Counter-intuitively, an underpowered amplifier is more dangerous to your speakers than an overpowered one. Push a small amplifier to its limit and it clips, sending a distorted signal full of harmonics that overheats tweeters. A larger amplifier running comfortably below its limit stays clean.
